Buy a Thinkpad

What is the Best Laptop to Buy?

When searching for the best laptop, you’ll encounter a variety of recommendations online, ranging from MacBooks and Chromebooks to other expensive or underpowered options. However, many small internet communities agree that Lenovo ThinkPads stand out as the best laptops ever created. Although only a few models are highly recommended, I will discuss those and some others that are well-respected but don’t quite reach the same level.

Reliability

If you ask for recommendations on reliable cars, brands like Honda, Toyota, or Subaru will likely come up. Similarly, for a reliable laptop, the ThinkPad is a top choice. ThinkPads were designed for corporate and enterprise environments, where reliability is crucial. They are known for their robustness and can handle extended use on a single charge. With high processing power, ample RAM, and good displays, they are built to last and perform consistently.

Performance

In terms of performance, ThinkPads are often compared to high-end sports cars—reliable and with a strong, consistent output. Lenovo equips ThinkPads with powerful processors, ample RAM, and fast storage options. This means they can handle complex software, multitasking, and intensive tasks like video editing or data analysis with impressive speed and efficiency. Moreover, ThinkPads are designed for easy upgrades. For example, I upgraded my T430 from an i5 to an i7 processor quickly, enhancing performance without needing a new laptop. This upgradeability reflects good computer engineering principles, designed with people and businesses in mind, allowing for component upgrades instead of complete replacements.

Durability

ThinkPads are built to endure the daily grind, including occasional spills and rough handling. They undergo rigorous military-grade testing to ensure they can withstand shocks, vibrations, and extreme temperatures. This makes them ideal for users needing a laptop that stands the test of time. There is a video demonstrating that ThinkPads can handle spills effectively, with no damage thanks to thoughtful engineering and design.

Keyboard and Ergonomics

A standout feature of ThinkPads is their keyboard. They are widely praised for their tactile feedback, key travel, and overall typing experience. For those who spend long hours typing, the ThinkPad keyboard minimizes fatigue and maximizes efficiency.

Display Quality

While some laptops cut costs on display quality, ThinkPads generally come with high-resolution screens that are sharp, bright, and color-accurate. This makes them suitable for tasks requiring detailed views, such as graphic design, photo editing, or enjoying high-definition media.

Here are some ThinkPad models worth considering:

  1. ThinkPad T420 - Released in 2011, this model is a portable workstation with good speakers, excellent battery life, and is a “bigger” version of the X220.

  2. ThinkPad X220 - A more compact version of the T420, the X220 also comes as a tablet model with a pen and a touchscreen display. While it lacks the superior speakers of the T420, it is still a solid choice. Note that the TrackPoint navigation is preferred over the smaller trackpad.

  3. ThinkPad T480 - Considered “The Last Great ThinkPad”, this 2018 model combines modern features with the classic ThinkPad feel, though it lacks the iconic keyboard found in the T430 model.

Why Choose Older Models?

These older ThinkPads remain highly effective despite their age. They are perfect for those who want a reliable machine for everyday tasks or wish to explore Linux. These laptops are affordable, easy to use, and powerful. Most come with i5 or i7 processors, and RAM is upgradable. Battery life is exceptional, and they are Linux-friendly with good Wi-Fi support. Windows also works well on these models. Additionally, aftermarket parts are widely available, ensuring easy repairs and upgrades.

In conclusion, ThinkPads are highly recommended if you don’t need cutting-edge processing power and want a reliable, upgradeable laptop. Other brands may be tempting, but the ThinkPad experience is unmatched.
